I was supposed to be on that bus. I had finished a night of volunteering at Haddasah Ein Kerem, and wanted to visit my sister who lived near Jaffa St. The bus was there at the stop. Instead, I changed my mind at the last minute, and took another bus back to my school in Bayit Vegan. I wanted to clean my dorm room and catch up on some sleep before my first class of the day, at noon. About ten minutes after getting to my dorm, I stepped out on the porch and saw and heard the sirens coming from the German colony area down the highway toward Shaarei Zedek hospital. It was a bad feeling.
Then, my volunteering supervisor called my cellphone. She wanted to know if I was OK, since the suicide bombing happened on the bus going from the hospital. It was a shock. But, I wanted to help. I took a cab to my sister’s, and we brought some food and drinks over to the survivors at Bikkur Cholim hospital. It was surreal to think that I could have been them. Or worse.
Why I didn’t take the bus I’ll never know. But I’ll always know that there is a reason for why we are where we are. And I’ll always make the best of that.
